The provincial rugby season has opened with Northland grabbing an upset 26-19 win over Taranaki in New Plymouth.

Northland have made the perfect start to their 2010 provincial rugby campaign by upsetting Taranaki 26-19 in New Plymouth.

The visitors out-scored Taranaki three tries to one but defensively were too strong for the home side.

All Black squad member Rene Ranger was a stand-out playing at centre for Northland, breaking tackles and making a number of penetrating runs.

Flanker Dean Budd, winger Simon Munro and Lachie Munro scored tries for Northland, with Lachie Munro kicking a conversion and three penalties.

First-five Willie Ripia had a good night with the boot for Taranaki, kicking four penalties and a conversion but he couldn't inspire his new-look back-line to break down the Northland defense.

Veteran first-five David Holwell directed play well for Northland and showed that he will once again be a key member of their side.

Northland 26: Dean Budd, Simon Munro, Lachie Munro tries; Lachie Munro conversion; Lachie Munro 3 penalties.
Taranaki 19: Chris Walker try; Willie Ripia conversion; Ripia 4 penalties.
