Discarded All Black Isaac Ross will take on a leadership role with Canterbury and use the ITM Cup to prove he is up to international standard.

The onus is well and truly on Canterbury lock Isaac Ross heading into this season's ITM Cup campaign.

The former All Black has been told he requires improvement in a number of areas if he is to make a return at international level.

Ross accepts he needs to take on a greater leadership role with the red and blacks. He says there is a bit of weight on his shoulders

Canterbury opens its season against Hawke's Bay in Christchurch tonight. The defending champions has lost their season-opener in the previous two seasons.
