Phoenix borrow "Fred" from DC United

Brazilian footballer "Fred" has signed on as a guest player for the Wellington Phoenix; he will play six matches

AC Milan may have secured David Beckham, but the Wellington Phoenix have got Fred.

The DC United attacking midfielder will head for a six-match stint with the Phoenix during the Major League Soccer off season.

It is a similar deal to that struck between the LA Galaxy and AC Milan over the services of David Beckham. Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata says it is a win-win situation, but they are grateful all the same. Pignata says for DC United it is great because Fred will stay fit.

Fred will be available for the Phoenix match against Newcastle next Sunday in Wellington.
