Hockey is set to utilise the expansion of video technology, will be trialled at the Champions Trophy in Melbourne

While some sports wrestle with it, hockey is embracing the use of technology.

The International Hockey Federation will trial an updated video review system at the Champions Trophy, starting in Melbourne on Saturday.

The teams will be allowed one referral per match on the decision of umpires to award, or disallow, goals, penalty corners and penalty strokes.

New Zealand men's coach Shane McLeod says it is a logical step. He says there will be some teething problems, but it will become part and parcel of the sport's development.

McLeod says he will certainly be seeking feedback from teams and umpires at the Champions Trophy as he expects it to be adopted fairly quickly. He says if it is deemed a success by players, coaches and umpires in Melbourne then it will certainly become a permanent part of the game.

Currently a video referral can only be used at the umpires discretion in relation to goal scoring.
