World number 12 Italian Flavia Pennetta has been confirmed as the ASB tennis Classic's top seed.

World number 12 Flavia Pennetta has been confirmed as the ASB tennis Classic's top seed.

The Italian has won two tournaments this year and reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in August.

Pennetta gives the ASB Classic two top 15 players, with China's Li Na already confirmed.

The announcement also makes up for the loss of Belgian Yanina Wickmayer who has been banned by Belgian anti-doping authorities for a year after failing to meet WADA's tough 'whereabouts' rule.
