South Africa seems assured of having Jacques Kallis available with both bat and ball for the first cricket test against the Black Caps beginning on Wednesday at Newlands.

Kallis has been in doubt with a niggling hamstring issue, however Proteas wicketkeeper AB de Villiers says he's on the improve.

de Villiers says fast bowler Vernon Philander, who's battling a similar problem still faces a race against time though.

He says they both looked strong, with Kallis definitely playing.

de Villiers says he's faced Philander and the signs are more positive than negative.
