Eyebrows have been raised across the country, including in the Wells household.
Sam Wells is surprised as anyone to have been named in the Black Caps squad for this week's one-off test against Zimbabwe, starting in Napier on Thursday.
The Otago all-rounder was focusing on earning selection for the Volts' one-day campaign when his name was called.
Wells says he was pleasantly surprised to get the call up and couldn't quite believe it.
Wells scored 65 runs and took a wicket in the first innings of the New Zealand XI's match against Zimbabwe in Gisborne.
The tour match finished in a predictable draw.
