The Black Caps have fallen to pieces in the third and deciding Twenty20 against South Africa at Eden Park.
Needing 166 to win, New Zealand's fallen three runs short, with one hand on the trophy.
With five overs left, the Black Caps needed 25 runs, after the batsmen had South Africa's bowlers at their mercy.
New Zealand lost four wickets for just 21 including two for three in the last over.
Captain Brendon McCullum says it's a brutal way to go down.
He says they've spoken about finishing teams off ruthlessly so it's bitterly disappointing.
A no ball in the final over from Marchant de Lange when New Zealand needed six off the final ball sent shivers up Proteas captain AB de Villiers' spine.
He says that opened the door for the Black Caps but de Lange proved his worth.
New Zealand was in control of the chase until batsman Jesse Ryder was dismissed for 52 playing a poor shot and the rot set in.
McCullum says Ryder's gutted.
But Proteas spinner Johan Botha says Ryder's wicket turned the game.
He says once they got Ryder out the entire momentum shifted.
South Africa win the series 2-1 with the one day series starting on Saturday.
