Phil Mickelson is on the fringe of golfing history, heading into the final round of the US PGA tour's Phoenix Open.

Mickelson's 24-under par for a total of 189, six strokes in front of Brandt Snedeker.

The only lower 54-hole score in PGA history was 188 from American Steve Stricker at the 2010 John Deere Classic.

If Mickelson fires 64 or lower he will break the record for the lowest 72-hole score in PGA history.

That was the 26-under par 254 set by Tommy Armour III at the 2003 Texas Open.
