A host of Kiwis who challenged for the New Zealand Open title will have a chance to put that disappointment behind at the Australian Open beginning today. Mark Brown, Michael Hendry and Gareth Paddison headline a string of New Zealanders who've descended on The Lakes in Sydney. They'll be in a field alongside eight-time major winner Tom Watson who's there to give something back rather than perform. "I can't say I expect to lay well but I hope to play well. "Getting a little bit better health and a bit less on South African time." Watson says he wanted to bring some of the old feel back to the tournament. "I've always been a big fan of the Australian Open in particular because Gary Player won it so many times and Jack Nicholson won it so many times." Tom Watson is grouped with defending champion Greg Chalmers and New Zealand Open champion Jake Higginbottom.
