A spanner in the works for defending New Zealand Women's golf Open champ Kristie Smith.

The Australian tees off at Pegasus on the back of a year troubled by injury, but with those concerns behind her.

Smith says a simple travelling error means she'll have a new face carrying her bag.

She says her Dad was supposed to caddie for her, but he forgot his passport.

Kiwi number one Lynette Brooky tees off at 8:10am, just before rising star Lydia Ko.
