The Warriors insist their new Elite Academy isn't designed to target rugby union players. The NRL club's revealed plans to make them the biggest sporting franchise in Australasia, including an academy, facilities upgrade, and a schoolboy competition. Warriors recruitment manager Dean Bell says it's all about boosting rugby league in New Zealand. "We can just worry about ourselves. We've had a lot of obstacles over the years, now it's a chance with the support of our owners, Owen and Eric, to really push it forward." Bell's adamant the plan isn't there to target rugby. "I don't think we can worry too much about rugby union to be honest. We're not doing it to spite rugby union, we're doing it because it's what's good for our game and if that pushes them into action, so be it." Photo: Photosport |
