By: Brenton Vannisselroy | Netball News | Sunday September 16 2012 17:35

The Silver Ferns have upset Australia 54-52 in the opening Constellation Cup netball test in Melbourne.

Despite playing without inspirational captain Casey Williams and starting a new-look mid-court, New Zealand outplayed the world champions after a shaky start.

The Silver Ferns held 12-10 quarter time advantage and maintained that two point lead at halftime.

New Zealand then outscored Australia 15-12 in the third quarter to open up a five goal cushion heading into the final period.

The Australians finished well but were never able to get within two goals of the Ferns.

The next test is in Auckland on Thursday night.
