Netball New Zealand is defending the appointment of Ruth Aitken as coach of the Northern Mystics in the ANZ Championship. NNZ boss Raelene Castle says some coaches believe their development pathway is being blocked. Castle says they're in discussions with those people and making sure they understand the appointment. "Make sure that those coaches understand what it is they need to do to step up to the next level. Ruth (Aitken) and Leigh (Gibbs) and Robyn (Broughton) are very open to having people involved in their programme and making sure that they're helping grow and develop those people to the next level." She says they're happy with the move but it's going to make life a bit tough for them. "It does, it makes it a little bit challenging, but we believe that we can fill that position so that we can continue that programme and it continues to get delivered." Aitken has signed a one year contract, with Debbie Fuller stepping down from the head coach role to spend more time with her family. Photo: Ruth Aitken (Photosport) |
