Read rules himself out of semi final

Crusaders number eight Kieran Read has ruled himself out of Friday night's Super Rugby semi final against the Chiefs.

The All Blacks number eight was forced from the field during his side's last meeting with the Chiefs in the penultimate round.

Read is still nursing a cracked rib and says he won't be playing in Hamilton. He says it made sense to make an early decision.

"It's a short week for us so I think to give the guys the most confidence heading into the game it was better to make the call early. I wouldn't have been 100 percent by Friday, it was just a case of whether I could get through some game. It was definitely in the best interest of the boys and I'm sure they'll do the job."

Despite ruling himself out of this weekend's game, Read says he'd like to start next week if his side wins in Hamilton.

"If I'm right to play then I'd like to be out on the field, just see what happens I guess. The guys that are out there at the moment are doing a great job so whether you change a winning team I don't know, but hopefully I'm available for selection next week."
