Chiefs close to full strength

The Chiefs should have a near full strength squad to pick from for their Super Rugby opener against the Highlanders Saturday night.

Props Ben Afeaki and Toby Smith did no physical scrum work today, still feeling the effects of an excessive amount of scrummaging in Friday night's water logged trial match with the Hurricanes.

Both are expected to be available for selection, likewise co-captain Liam Messam, who is being eased into the week having recovered from a calf tear and hooker Hika Elliott, who appear's over the neck injury that has plagued his build-up.

There was a minor scare this morning when Lelia Masaga's chest met prop Sona Taumalolo's elbow, however the flying right wing bounced up after a spending a bit of time on the turf.
