The New Zealand Under 20s rugby player at the centre of a rape allegation in South Africa is Nathan Harris. The Te Puke player has issued a statement outing himself, and saying he's innocent: "I am making this statement today so everyone knows that I am the player at the centre of this issue. There is no one else involved.
I want to say very strongly that I am innocent of the allegation made against me. However, I should not have allowed a woman to enter my room. This was against team rules.
I am proud to have had this amazing opportunity to represent my country playing rugby and I know that I let the team down and I let my family down.
For that I am truly sorry and I want to apologise to my team mates, team management and to all the parents and friends who supported our team, but especially to my family for the distress this has caused them all.
The past five days have been a very stressful and painful time for me and my family. I have learnt a lot and now I am hoping for a good outcome so I can get on with my life.
I have been advised that with a police investigation underway I am unable to comment further.
I ask for the media's understanding at this time and to respect the privacy of my family." Harris is being acknowledged for taking the heat off the rest of the Baby Blacks. Steve Axtens has coached the 20 year old at Bay of Plenty age group level, and isn't surprised he's come forward.
"It is a testament to what he is about and how he plays on the field. He's a tough straight shooting rooster, and he fronted up."
