New Zealand is through to the quarter-finals of the women's Olympic football tournament in London. The Football Ferns have beaten Cameroon 3-1 in Coventry. Captain Rebecca Smith scored late in the first half to give New Zealand a 1-nil lead at halftime. Cameroon made it two nil shortly after the break with an own goal, before Sarah Gregorius made it three nil. New Zealand will now face the United States in the quarter finals on Saturday morning. Smith says it's great to finally deal with the pressure properly and get their first win at a major tournament.
"In the beginning it was a little nerve-racking but I think once we slowed the game down and let our talents come out and played to our strengths we played alright." Photo: Photosport |
