Ferns' campaign comes to an end

The Olympic campaign of the Football Ferns is over, falling 2-nil to the USA in their quarterfinal at St James' Park.

Abby Wambach opened the scoring for the United States in the 27th minute, with the New Zealanders' hopes of forcing extra time extinguished with an 87th minute goal to Sydney Le Roux.

The US were wasteful with their 22 shot attempts, with only seven making it on goal while the Kiwis had seven of their 10 shots on target.
