Chelsea captain John Terry will undergo knee surgery and could be out for up to two months, relieving England football selectors of a potential headache.
The injury saves interim England manager Stuart Peace from having to decide whether to select Terry and Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand in the squad for next week's friendly against the Netherlands.
Terry was stripped of the England captaincy earlier this month due to his upcoming trial for allegedly racially abusing Ferdinand's brother, QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.
