By: Brenton Vannisselroy | Football News | Friday August 3 2012 18:29

The New Zealand women's football team believes its Olympic campaign is only just getting started.

The Football Ferns take on reigning champions USA for a place in the semi-finals in Newcastle tomorrow morning.

Coach Tony Readings says they came to the Olympics to play six matches and it remains their goal to play for a gold medal.

He says theyâ re getting better with every match.

"Normally in these tournaments the team that wins it is the one that doesn't necessarily start with a bang, they're the ones that grow slowly through the tournaments and we feel that's what we've done."

New Zealand lost 2-1 to the USA in Texas in February after conceding two goals in the last five minutes.
