Both of New Zealand's white water kayakers are in the semifinals at the London Olympics. Luuka Jones is through to the last 15 of the women's K1, matching Mike Dawson who yesterday reached the semis of the men's event. Jones has progressed as the 15th and final qualifier after a mixed performance. She clocked the 10th fastest time in her first run, but then struggled in her second and missed three gates. "My first run time was really fast, but I had six seconds of penalties which you can't really afford in a competition like this, basically." She had to rely on her first run time after struggling in her second and recording 152 seconds of time penalties. "I lost grip on my paddle above the first drop and then coming out of the upstream I just kind of lost my line a little bit and when the white water's flying so fast, you can't really afford to get off line too much." It's an improvement from Beijing when Jones finished last. Luuka Jones' semifinal will take place early on Friday morning. Photo: Luuka Jones (Photosport) |
