Armstrong takes out opening stage

Reigning Olympic champion Kristin Armstrong has won the opening stage of the New Zealand Women's Cycling Tour in Palmerston North.

American Armstrong has won the 7.1 kilometre time trial in 10 minutes and 15 seconds, 17 seconds ahead of compatriot Evelyn Stevens.

Veteran German Judith Arndt is a further second back in third.

Linda Villumsen is the best of the Kiwis, 22 seconds off the pace.

Today's second stage is a 137 kilometre loop from Ashurst back to Palmerston North.
