Swimming New Zealand is taking a step out of Auckland with the establishment of a regional high performance hub in Wellington.
The national centre remains at the Millennium Institute.
High Performance Governance Chairman Mark Berge says the overall aim is to develop more top level swimmers.
Berge says Wellington also offers youngsters study options.
He says the centres are not in competition with each other, but simply gives an alternative to Auckland.
Berge says the centre was originally going to be established in Christchurch, which is obviously not an option right now.
