Wellington's Gareth Kean has smoked the competition to take out the 100m backstroke at the New South Wales Swimming Championships in Sydney.

Keen has clocked the fifth fastest time of the year too and has gone under the Olympic qualifying mark.

Southland's Natalie Wiegersma has made the podium, finishing third in the 200m individual medley.
