Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray has survived a gruelling four set battle to advance to the fourth round at the US Open in New York.

Murray had to battle for three hours and 53 minutes before finally seeing off the challenge of Spain's Feliciano Lopez in four sets.

Top seed Roger Federer has had no such problems in dismissing Fernando Verdasco in straight sets.

Serena Williams has beaten Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets, reversing the result of their Australian Open meeting.
