Roger Federer has survived an almighty scare at Wimbledon.

Federer was forced to come back from two sets to love down for the eighth time in his career, finally advancing to the second week of the championship, 6-1 in the fifth set over Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

The six-time former champion took advantage of some last set cramping of 30-year-old Benneteau to surge to victory.

Men's top seed Novak Djokovic also advanced with a four sets win over Radek Stepanek.

In the women's top seed Maria Sharapova and third seed Agnieska Radwanska are through.
