Oracle chief executive Sir Russell Coutts has dismissed claims the America's Cup has become too expensive.
Only three syndicates have paid the entry fee to challenge Oracle for the Auld Mug next year.
Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton claims expense is the reason behind the poor challenger numbers.
Sir Russell believes the global economy is to blame, but does concede more could have been done to cut costs.
He says he doesn't believe it will be more expensive in relative terms than what it has been in the past.
He says even if there are only four challengers the America's Cup will be just as competitive as it ever has been.
