I don’t think NZ has a leg to stand on when it comes to mass protestations at Australian rugby league allegedly stealing our players.
It’s unpalatable sure, knowing that the financial lure of origin is simply too great to ignore, but that’s pro football.
Filthy lucre aside, we can’t complain of wholesale cattle theft, when a lot of those blokes have spent time in Aussie, live there, pay tax there and have family there.
The theory put forward by irate NZ 'leaguies' that it’s not fair to Queensland and New South Welsh kids, as their rightful places are being pinched by Kiwis, holds no water either. Whose position did Fien, Cayless, Hoffman, Nightingale etc pinch? Even more galling than these players being Aussie born and bred, they still live in the great southern land as well. Very Kiwi. I’m sure there are plenty of young Kiwis just as pissed at those selections as we are with that of Tamou, Kasiano etc. At least those 2 are actually living in their adopted country.
It would be pleasing if Origin selected players could still play for their chosen country, but until the rules are changed, we just have to suck it up.
Until then, I’d suggest the NZRL choose players very carefully, so at least we can take the moral high ground as opposed to their cast-offs.
That’s all.
