We’re just not very good at cricket. There, I’ve said it.
Sure, on their day, we have world beating players. The trouble is, we never know when that day is, if any other player will have their day at the same time or if we can string a couple of days together. Every now and then, we’ll pull a rabbit out of the hat, like Hobart, but generally there’s no hat, let alone a rabbit.
We’ll endlessly tinker with the structure of NZ Cricket, employ Aussies, bake selection pies, etc etc. But it all amounts to nothing. The great redeemer, John Wright, hasn’t really fired a shot. Has there been a definitive change in direction for our national side since he’s had the reins? Not really.
So what’s the solution? There isn’t one. Just grin and bear it. Roll with the punches. Take the good days and savour them. Deal with the bad days as best as you know how. Try reassuring yourself with the same hollow rhetoric that we get from them.
Most importantly, know that they are giving their best. Just remember though, that for the majority of the time, their best just isn’t that good.
That’s all.
