The Roosters have clinched a coveted week off in the NRL playoffs with a 24-22 win over the Broncos in Sydney.

The second seeded home side were forced to hold off a fast-finishing Broncos side who took the lead 22-18 after being 14-nil down.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson says it was far from good enough.

"We let Brisbane back in, our job is just to keep improving and do we have a lot to improve on? Yeah that's for sure. The last plays on either end, some of the biggest plays in the game we need to get better at."

The home side had to score a late try through Latrell Mitchell to claim the win after blowing a 14-nil first half lead.

Coach Trent Robinson is full of praise for Mitchell.

"And that's a part of the attitude that we've had this year and he's a part of that, he's bought that to play. The strength of him on that play, and the speed and power in that five metres that won us the game."

Meanwhile Broncos counterpart Wayne Bennett is seething.

"Look we'd be lucky to beat the teams that finished 15th and 16th with our efforts tonight."

The Roosters get a week off, while the Broncos meet the winner of the Manly-Penrith elimination final next week.
