Two from three for New Zealand on the first day of netball's Fast Five tournament in Melbourne.

The Fast Five Ferns closed the day with a 32-29 loss to Australia, after earlier wins over England and South Africa.

Coach Kiri Wills said they're adapting well but still have plenty to work on.

"I'm really happy with their progress and that they're now being brave and having the courage to just have a look at some stuff and attack the ball. But the speed is pretty hard."

New Zealand plays Jamaica and Malawi before the playoffs today.
