Rafael Nadal has captured his 16th career grand slam title with a straight sets win over Kevin Anderson in today's US Open men's singles final.

Nadal was too strong for the 28th seed, winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to claim his third US Open title. The number one seed last won the US Open title in 2013, the last time he won two grand slams in the same year.

Anderson was playing in his first ever grand slam final.

Nadal took out the opening stanza after back-to-back breaks. He broke the 28th seed in the seventh game of the set after Anderson saved four previous break points. Nadal then broke Anderson in the South African's next service game to take the set.

The second set had a similar outcome with Nadal taking the crucial break in the sixth game.
