One of New Zealand's greatest sailors is helping the next generation of yachties find their feet this weekend.

America's Cup 2017 chief executive Sir Russell Coutts is launching an open class race at the Lake Wanaka Yacht Club's New Year regatta.

The five-time America's Cup winner will also be taking some coaching clinics with former Team New Zealand teammates Barry McKay and Hamish Pepper.

The club's youth sailing co-ordinator Craig Fahey said it's a coup for junior sailors.

"For him to be able to give the time and energy towards youth sailing in New Zealand now, in a matter of five months out from the Americas cup itself is pretty special."
