The Hurricanes have axed both of their starting props from last week's Super Rugby win over the Highlanders.

Chris Eves and Jeffrey To'omaga-Allen have been dropped from the 23, with Toby Smith and Ben May to start against the Chiefs on Friday night.

Vaea Fifita moves to lock alongside James Blackwell, with Reed Prinsep to start at blindside.

Assistant coach Jason Holland says changes are a combination of form and rotation.

He says they're looking for ways to be better up front with different combinations.

There is just one change to the backline with Wes Goosen starting on the left wing, with Ben Lam being rested.
