A varied report card for the Richie Mo'unga/Beauden Barrett play-making tandem from All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster.

The duo endured a challenging night's work during the Rugby Championship draw with South Africa in Wellington.

Foster says initially the match mirrored the Argentina test.

"The right players weren't instinctively getting into the shape that we really wanted them, but after a while, I thought there were some nice patches in that third and fourth wuarter where Richie and Beauden got a few things organised."

The All Blacks squad will be trimmed from 39 to 34 on Wednesday ahead of the trip to Perth to face the Wallabies on August 10.

However, former All Black lock Ian Jones thinks that the 'Bo'unga' combination should be given another crack.

He told Radio Sport Breakfast that he wouldn't mind them sticking with that combination for a while and seeing how it works.

"I also love Ben Smith at 15. He can do more things at 15 then he can at 14.”
