On the edge of a Black Caps test debut, Lockie Ferguson is playing down his achievements for New Zealand A.

The Auckland paceman took seven wickets in the three-day match against the West Indies in Lincoln, which included a first innings five-for.

He's also taking 19 wickets through three Plunket Shield matches for the Aces.

Ferguson could be called into the New Zealand XI for the opening test in Wellington this week, with Tim Southee expecting his first child.

Ferguson is playing down his performance.

"One of those days when I guess where the catches were caught, it was nice. It was definitely nice to get a little bag, they definitely helped against a side which scored 450 against us in one day."

However, Ferguson may spend the majority of the build up to the Black Caps opening test against on the physio table.

"[I] need to get the body in shape and do all the recovery needed. Obviously I've just come off the three-dayer in Lincoln so I'll do what I can to get the body back to 100 per cent and go from there."
