If you ask most New Zealanders what they think of an Indian Summer the typical response might be "oh that's
nice" or "looking forward to that alright".
Right now though, if you asked that same question to those who are also NZ Cricket fans, the response would probably be completely
Because so far the Black Caps version of their own Indian Summer is something none of us want any more of.
What has happened to our team? How have we suddenly got so much worse? Or is it (maybe) that we weren't as good as we
once thought we were?
Ranked #2 in the world in test cricket (before we went to Australia) was clearly an anomaly. We were so far adrift of Ozzie second best
would've been flattering.
Three straight comprehensive losses now followed by 3-straight T20 losses. And as far as the test format goes, we were so thoroughly embarrassed by the Baggy Green it's already become the topic no-one wants to talk about or ever get reminded of.
The next couple of 5-dayers vs India are a bit like accepting a ride from someone you've just met at the pub. Do I really want to do this? All good judgement is telling me this might not end well...
As for the rest of our Indian Summer I think there's a couple of truths that need to be absorbed:
The first being that both Oz & India are much better teams than us - and they should be (given it's the #1 sport in Oz and cricket in India is like rugby is here). And second, without our full strength bowling line-up (i.e. a fully fit and firing Trent Boult) we are only ever containing at best. To win consistently we completely rely on 4/5 players to play well EVERY game.
World class we are not. Yes we have a few players who are but not the full XI and in fact name any NZ side ever where that hasn't been the case.
No we're not a bad team. And no we're also not the world's best team.
Yes we'll win some that we should and probably won't when we really wish we would. So, apart from nothing what's changed?
