The Southern Steel have let a four-goal second-half lead slip to lose 67-64 to the Queensland Firebirds in the first ANZ netball Championship semi-final in Brisbane.

The defending champion Firebirds have outscored the Steel 20-15 in the final quarter to complete the comeback and stretch their winning run at home.

Steel captain Wendy Frew said she's proud of her team, who only won three games last year.

Frew said it's a really disappointing finish to their season, but it's been an honour to lead them.

The Firebirds will host either the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic or the New South Wales Swifts in next week's grand final.
