The Olympic podium has been a couple of steps too far for the New Zealand women’s kayaking four.

The Kiwis have finished fifth in the final of the K4 500 in Rio, after sitting third at the halfway stage of the medal race.

Crew member Caitlin Ryan said they’re proud of what they’ve achieved.

She said the result may not have come with a medal, but she's happy with how far the crew have come.

Fifth is four places better than where they finished at last year’s world championships.
