New Zealand's para-athletes have returned home and been brought back down to earth.

The 31-strong team arrived at Auckland airport this morning and will have an official welcome home event on Auckland's North Shore tomorrow.

New Zealand beat their pre-Games medal target by three, collecting the second biggest haul in New Zealand history with 21 - nine of those being gold.

High Performance Sport New Zealand boss Alex Baumann says their record haul may not result in a funding boost.

He says on the Olympic side a number of sports performed really well, but so did non-Olympic sports like Surf Life Saving and Black Fins.

Alex Baumann says as always they'll have to go through a thorough review before coming to a decision.
