Counties-Manukau's ended Auckland's nine-year reign as national women's rugby champions.

The Heat have downed the Auckland Storm 41-22 in the Farah Palmer Cup final in Pukekohe, after leading 26-10 at halftime.

It's Counties' first title in what's just the team's fourth year in the competition.

Meanwhile, reigning men's champions Canterbury have extended their lead atop the Mitre 10 Cup.

The Red and Blacks have beaten Taranaki 39-34 in New Plymouth to sit eight points clear of the chasing pack with two rounds remaining.
