Brendon McCullum made a name for himself on the world stage donning gloves and pads for the Black Caps.

What might not be so well known about him is he once kept Dan Carter out of a South Island Secondary Schools rugby team.

And after to stellar international cricket career, McCullum has made his return to rugby following an 18-year break.

The former King's High School first XV first five-eighth ended his extended break from the sport lining up at fullback for United Matamata Sports B in their local derby against Hinuera B in the Waikato competition.

Unfortunately, he wasn't able to guide the side to victory in his 60-minute stint.
